Assessment of Flood Damage: When necessary, GIS helps in documenting the need for government disaster relief money and can be used by insurance companies to help determine the financial value of property loss. A local authority must map flood-prone areas in order to assess the amount of flood danger in the neighborhood. Digital maps can be used to demonstrate the damage and to accurately assess it. Navigation: Web-based navigational devices promote secure waterway travel. For improved navigation, ferry paths and cargo routes are defined. Accurate topography and hydrographic data are provided by ArcGIS, which also supports safe navigation systems. Recently, the Coastal Resources Division of the DNR started the process of using GIS to find, categorize, and record these non-historical wrecks.
